Description

Gluten Free, Vegan, Refined Sugar Free

Stovetop apple butter is thick and creamy, flavorful and sweet.  It is made with only a couple of ingredients, no added sugar, and is a healthy spread for muffins, bread, or straight from the spoon!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds sliced apples*
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice (optional)
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Combine sliced apples, all spices, and 1/2 cup water in a large pot on the stove.  Mix to evenly disburse spices.  Turn heat to medium.
  2. Cook covered for 30 minutes.
  3. Mash apples (as much as you can – won’t be completely) with a potato masher.  Leave pot uncovered, and cook for 30 more minutes, stirring every 10 minutes so that apples don’t burn.
  4. After first ten minute increment (40 minutes total) add 2 tbsp water, mix.
  5. After one hour of total cooking, remove from heat and blend with an immersion blender.
  6. If it is not thick enough, put back over heat in 5 minute increments until it reaches desired consistency.

Notes

*I have made this recipe with multiple kinda of apples and think you can pick any that you prefer.  Also I do not peel my apples.  After the immersion blending you can barely tell it’s there and I like the added fiber.  You can peel if desired though.
