Description

Gluten Free Option, Vegan Option, Refined Sugar Free Option

A seasonal spin on the classic favorite sloppy joe, plus it has added nutrients from using real pumpkin in the sauce. The best part is it can be made gluten free, refined sugar free, and 100% plant based so anyone can enjoy!


Ingredients

  • 16 oz ground turkey, beef, or vegan protein alternative
  • 1/2 white onion – diced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper – diced
  • 1 clove garlic – minced
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tbsp coconut aminos
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Sautee your onion, pepper, and garlic on a greased pan over medium heat until they begin to soften.
  2. Add your turkey or beef to the pan, break up into ground pieces, and cook until brown (if you are using a less lean meat, drain before adding sauce ingredients).
  3. Decrease the heat to low, add the remaining ingredients for the sauce, and cook until protein is evenly coated and flavors are evenly distributed.
  4. Serve warm on a hamburger bun.

Notes

Gluten free option – just use gluten free buns and if using a vegan meat alternative make sure that is also gluten free.

Vegan option – use a vegan meat alternative.  The photos on this post are made with Pure Farmland vegan protein starters and we loved them!

Refined sugar free option – make sure your ketchup is refined sugar free.  And then if you think it isn’t sweet enough you can use maple syrup.
