Runny yolks, avocado, and fresh jalapenos.. sounds like a winning combination to me!
This recipe became one of our favorite go-to’s in my household while we have been on our Whole30 adventure. But I have the feeling that it is in our meal rotation to stay! It is SO easy to make, using only a simple few ingredients. Plus provides enough protein and flavor to keep you both full AND satisfied all night long. So whether you are a fellow Whole30er, or think we are crazy for doing it, this can still be a delicious dinner for you and your family that you can feel good about serving!
Fried or Poached
The first time we had these burgers we put fried eggs on top and devoured them in like five minutes they were so good. But my fiance is obsessed with poached eggs. So he literally learned how to poach an egg for the sole purpose of putting one on top of this recipe. I am not going to lie I had my doubts. But it was actually a big success! So whether you are more of a fried egg or poached egg kind of person, just know that either method you choose will make an absolutely delicious topping for this burger.
Avocado Your Way
If you didn’t already feel like you had all of the choices, there are also two great options for using the avocado to complement your burger. The first one is simple, slice it up, put it on the plate, and put your patty on top of it. It makes a great layer of flavor and added texture for when you cut into your egg and get some yolk, burger, and avocado all at once.
The second option takes one extra step, but is worth it in my opinion (and my preferred way to eat these!). Make the avocado into a spicy dip! Just take your avocado and put it in a small mixing bowl (you can either do this twice with each half or just go ahead and make it all at once using your whole avocado). Simply add a few drops of lime juice, about 1/4 tsp chili powder, a few sprinkles of cayenne, a little garlic if you’d like, and some salt and pepper. You don’t need to blend it, just mash it up with a fork and you are good to go! It leaves you with a chunky, spicy, avocado dip that really adds an extra kick to this meal. Which I am guessing you like if you are making jalapeno burgers in the first place!
Then it’s all down to burger basics – just take some ground turkey, diced fresh jalapeno & onions, some spices, make your patties, and you are good to get cooking!
Jalapeno Turkey Burgers
Ingredients:
- 1 lb turkey (lean but not too lean – the extra fat makes better/jucier patties)
1 jalapeno – diced
- 1/4 onion – diced
- 1/2 – 1 tbsp black pepper
- A couple dashes cayenne
- salt to taste
- For complements:
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 egg
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients (except complements) together and form four patties.
- Cook on the grill or stove over medium heat until cooked through.
- Cut avocado into slices (or make into a spicy spread – YUM).
- Either place avocado slices on plate and place burger patty on top, or but patty on the place and spread the avocado dip on top of the patty)
- Poach or fry your egg, place on top of dish.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
If you Must Have a Bun…
I know there are some of you out there reading this that just are not okay with these bun-less options. Maybe you aren’t big into avocado (I wasn’t until recently!) or don’t enjoy the runny yolk of an egg (crazies :P). Or maybe you just want a good old burger and bun. You can always go a more “traditional” route by making a bun substitute and serving the burger patty on that. Two Whole30 compliant options I would highly recommend would be to make it a lettuce wrap, or get a big sweet potato and slice it into thin-ish circles, cook it a bit, and have a sweet potato bun!
Or – even better – put this beauty between something even more beautiful, my sweet potato/zucchini fritters! But you will have to wait for that one, recipe is coming to the blog soon 🙂
