You can turn hot dog buns into delicious garlic bread in minutes! This is a great way to use up leftover hot dog buns and turn them into a crave-worthy side dish.
I recently ordered my groceries online and instead of getting a pack of sandwich buns, I accidentally got a package of hot dog buns. It wouldn’t work for the recipe I was making but I didn’t want them to go to waste. Since my household loves garlic bread, I decided to see if I could turn these extra hot dog buns into tasty loaves of garlic bread. It worked like a charm! This easy recipe is the perfect way to use up leftover hot dog buns.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Hot dog buns- You can use any style of a hotdog bun. These were artisan style buns so they were slightly larger, but any size is fine.
- Butter- You could substitute for margarine or a dairy free butter spread if preferred.
- Garlic- We’ll use lots of fresh garlic for the best flavor. I don’t recommend using pre-minced garlic.
- Garlic powder- This enhances the garlic flavor without adding too much sharpness from fresh garlic.
- Parsley- This is optional. You could substitute with dried parsley or oregano.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this recipe with hamburger buns? Yes! You can make hamburger bun garlic bread by following the same directions as noted below. You may need to adjust the cooking time depending on the size of the buns.
How should I store leftover garlic bread? TStore leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days. Reheat by toasting in the oven. To freeze the leftovers, wrap the buns tightly in aluminum foil then place in a freezer bag. When ready to enjoy the bread, bake it in the oven until crispy. You may want to brush the buns with melted butter to prevent the bread from drying.
Can I use olive oil instead of butter? You can, but I prefer the butter flavor for this recipe.
What should I serve with garlic bread? Enjoy this with marinara sauce or tomato sauce for a simple dipping option! Another idea is to top each bun with shredded Parmesan cheese just before baking.
Can I use other bread? Yes! This method works great with traditional baguettes or french bread. You may need to add a few minutes to the baking time.
Why do I need to microwave the garlic? Microwaving the raw garlic helps tame the garlic flavor so you get plenty of garlic flavor without the harsh, sharp flavor that garlic can have.
Why do I need garlic powder? Combining fresh garlic and garlic powder helps enhance the garlic flavor without making it overpowering.
How do I get rid of the smell of garlic? If the garlic smell lingers in the microwave, place ¼ cup of baking soda in a small dish and leave it in the microwave overnight. It will absorb the odor. (You do not need to turn the microwave on.)
