Ingredients You’ll Need for Hot Chocolate French Toast:

  • Bread – I used brioche style bread for my french toast.  I love it because it is nice and. thick and fluffy.  But you can use any bread you prefer!  A gluten free one, a paleo one, any!
  • Eggs – French toast is classically a slice of bread dipped into an egg/milk/cinnamon mixture so hence, the eggs!  I have seen people make French toast with flax eggs for a vegan option, but I have never done it myself so I can’t speak to the results.
  • Milk – to mix with the eggs that you will dip the bread in.  I used unsweetened oat milk but you can use any milk you want!
  • Cocoa powder – to make it chocolatey of course!
  • Sugar- If you want to make this recipe sugar free, you can use stevia.
  • Toppings – What makes this hot chocolate french toast complete is the toppings!  You’d never drink a glass of hot chocolate without whipped cream, marshmallows, and a little extra chocolate sauce would you? (or is that just me?). Well I like topping this with all three!  You don’t even need to use syrup once you’ve got these on top.

Tips for the Perfect Hot Chocolate French Toast:

  • To make this super authentic, you can substitute the cocoa powder and sugar for your favorite hot chocolate mix!
  • Use a whisk to combine the cocoa powder with the milk mixture.  It is easier than a fork because it will take a couple of minutes to get it to combine.

In addition to the listed ingredients, you will need:

  • a bowl
  • a whisk (optional but recommended)
  • a frying pan and cooking spray

Description

Imagine your favorite glass of hot chocolate.  It is warm, lightly sweetened, really chocolatey, topped with whipped cream and marshmallows, and makes your morning oh so cozy.  That is what this is, just in french toast form!  This hot chocolate french toast is the perfect healthy breakfast recipe that will warm you up on a chilly day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 slices of thick brioche-style bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cocoa, and sugar.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the mixture, on both sides, and then transfer to a greased pan over medium heat and fry until golden brown, flip, and do the same on the other side.
  3. Serve with whipped cream, marshmallows, and chocolate chips!

Notes

You could also use a hot chocolate mix in place of the cocoa powder and sugar

I was able to get five slices of bread done with this mixture, but they were large brioche-style slices.  I would be prepared to be able to get anywhere from 5-6 slices out of this amount of egg mixture.   If you need more for a crowd, simply double or triple the recipe!

For a gluten free option, use gluten free bread
