Banana Flour Chocolate Banana Bread

Did you know you can make banana bread of out banana flour? This chocolate banana bread is moist and decadent, gluten free, and surprisingly healthy too!

This bread tastes rich and chocolatey but it’s secretly healthy! Thanks to the banana flour, this recipe is naturally gluten free. And it’s a great source of fiber!

What is Banana Flour?

Banana flour is a type of flour made from green, unripe bananas that have been peeled, chopped, dried, and then finely ground into a powder. It is commonly used as a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour in baking and cooking. Banana flour has a slightly sweet flavor and a light, fluffy texture, making it an excellent ingredient for gluten-free baking. It is also a popular ingredient in many African and Caribbean cuisines.

Where can you buy banana flour?

I got my banana flour on Amazon! You might be able to find it in certain health food stores but I found that it was the cheapest online. The Let’s Do Organic brand works great in this recipe.

How to Make Bread with Banana Flour

Banana flour isn’t a 1:1 swap for traditional flour, so I don’t recommend substituting it in any recipe. But it works great in this bread! For the sweetener, I used granulated sugar but you could substitute for stevia, if desired.

Mix the wet ingredients with the sugar first, stirring until the sugar is well incorporated. Then add the remaining dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

What could make banana bread more true to its name than using banana flour?  Turns out, it makes it more delicious too!  This chocolate banana bread is moist and decadent, gluten free, and surprisingly healthy too!


  • 3 very ripe bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted and cooled
  • 1/4 cup almond milk or dairy milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup banana flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips


  1. Preheat oven to 375F.
  2. Mash bananas with a fork until most lumps are gone, and then add eggs, milk coconut oil, and almond milk and mix until well combined.
  3. Stir in the remaining ingredients, and then fold in chocolate chips (use as much as you want for these!).
  4. Pour batter in a greased bread pan, and top with additional chocolate chips if desired.
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the edges are browning, a toothpick should come out relatively clean.
  6. Let cool before removing from pan.
