The classic 2 ingredient bagel recipe made with greek yogurt and flour is made healthier using whole wheat flour, and turned sweet using a vanilla yogurt and cinnamon sugar topping for the ultimate breakfast bagel experience.
Okay so I know the first thing you are going to say to me is “but Megan these are not made with only 2 ingredients.” And you are correct. I call them two-ingredient bagels because that is the base of their dough – it is made mainly using greek yogurt and self rising flour. This is the classic combo we see out there when it comes to 2 ingredient bagels.
So what did I do differently? I swapped the self rising flour for whole wheat to add nutrients back into the recipe, and I swapped plain greek yogurt for vanilla to give us a hint of sweet flavor. I also put cinnamon in them, and topped them with a cinnamon coconut sugar sprinkle for extra flavor. Let’s just say these two-ingredient bagels got an upgrade.
What is Self Rising Flour?
Self rising flour is all purpose flour that has baking powder and salt added. That’s how most 2 ingredient bages are made but if you want to use whole wheat flour, you can make your own whole wheat self rising flour by adding baking powder and salt, as noted in the recipe below.
Ingredients You Need for Cinnamon 2 Ingredient Bagels:
- Whole wheat flour – I like using whole wheat flour because it is less refined than white flour and retains more nutrients and fiber. If you want a gluten-free option your best bet would probably be gluten-free all-purpose flour.
- Vanilla greek yogurt – I use a protein yogurt I buy from Aldi, and it has zero added sugar. I think the Oikos Triple Zero brand also doesn’t have added sugar. You could try to swap this out for a dairy free yogurt, just make sure it is really thick.
- Baking powder – to help them rise!
- Salt – adds depth to our other flavors in the dough
- Cinnamon – they are cinnamon bagels after all!
Tips for the Perfect Bagels:
- Use a thick yogurt. You can try swapping out the greek yogurt for a dairy-free alternative, but make sure it is thicker so you get a good dough to form.
- Don’t over-knead. You want everything combined, but similar to over-mixing muffins, if you overdo it too much you will end up with dense bagels.
- Don’t skip the egg wash (if you can) – it helps make the cinnamon and/or sugar sticks and it helps give a good glossy finish to the bagels. It is not necessary if you want a vegan option though.
Variations and Substituions
You can also make savory bagels if you prefer. Use plain yogurt instead of vanilla yogurt and add your favorite seasoning instead of the cinnamon. I used Everything But the Bagel seasoning for this batch below and it was delicious!
